It all began in 1964, when 100,000 French farmers merged their regional dairy co-ops and began selling their product nationally. One year later, two men by the name of Yola and Coplait joined forces and, using a special process that made their yogurt distinctive and unique, they created...drum roll, please...Yoplait!
In 1967, we added fresh fruit to our yogurt (the tastiest of combos, don’t you think?), and in 1971*, we crossed the Atlantic waters and found permanent residence in Canada and the U.S.
Fast-forward to today. We have come so far in the world of yogurt, and we owe it all to those two gentlemen who had the ingenious idea to create a product the world would wonder how it ever lived without. In the 47 years (hey everyone, look who’s almost 50!) since Misters Yola and Coplait merged their names and ideas, we have created 11 different types of yogurt and more than 85 flavors.
So, that’s what Yoplait is all about. We are more of a family than a business. We believe in our yogurt, that it’s still the best in the world, and we believe in our people behind the deliciousness.
We also believe in our community. That’s why we boldly and proudly support breast cancer awareness through our Save Lids to Save Lives program and the Race for the Cure. For 13 years, we’ve partnered with the Susan G. Komen Foundation to raise more than $30 million for breast cancer outreach across the country. Your best friend’s mother, your son’s fourth-grade teacher, your sister...anyone who has been touched by breast cancer, that’s who we do this for. If their lives can be just a little bit better, their treatments just a little bit easier, because of our efforts, well, we really can’t ask for a whole lot more than that.
But we don’t stop there. We also support two other very important causes: Camp Sunrise and Crisis Nursery. Camp Sunrise is a multicultural organization dedicated to helping urban youth develop the life skills needed to make a successful transition from adolescence to adulthood. Crisis Nursery works to end child abuse and neglect and create strong, healthy families. Both are incredibly valuable causes that rely on volunteers’ time and manpower to continue helping those in need. And our Yoplait employees are there, on the frontlines, helping wherever and whenever they can. Not because they have to, but because they want to. It’s part of us, who we are as a company. We are dedicated to bettering our community on corporate and personal levels because we believe in the potential of our world.
Speaking of our world, we also believe in our responsibility to help our environment in any way we can. For us, that means creating a new cup design that uses less plastic and allows us to ship the cups closer together. Doing so has already eliminated more than 2 million pounds of plastic per year. Over the next two years, our goal is to reduce the amount of plastic released into the environment by 9 million pounds annually.
It also means partnering with local dairy co-ops to supply us regionally sourced, high-quality milk for our yogurt. Local milk means fewer road miles, and already we’ve managed to reduce our road miles by 1.8 million per year. We work closely with our partners to support sustainable initiatives that will reduce greenhouse emissions, and we strive to increase their connections so they can learn from one another. This is our earth, too, and we care deeply about how we treat it and the imprint we leave behind.
So there you have it. That’s the story of how two men with a dream began a company that not only makes delicious yogurt, but also uses its success to build goodness within the community. Because while giving the world delicious yogurt is so good, making the world a happier place is even better.
