If you’re picnicking this summer season, remember that E. Coli, Salmonella,
Listeria and other bacteria are commonly associated with raw hamburger meat,
chicken and hot dogs. Help avoid food-borne illness by following these food
safety guidelines:

Always cook meat thoroughly: 180 degrees F for chicken, 160 degrees F for red
meat. Cook hot dogs thoroughly, even if the package says they are pre-cooked.

Keep foods requiring refrigeration, like potato salad, meat or dairy products,
out of direct sun. If it takes longer than an hour to get to the picnic site,
transport them in an ice-filled cooler. Be sure to store all leftovers in the
cooler within two hours of preparation.

To avoid contamination from flies and airborne contaminants, cover food with
lids, plastic wrap or paper towels.

Wash your hands frequently, especially when you’re handling raw meat. Use warm,
soapy water, and dry your hands completely with paper towels.

Use separate plates and cutting boards for raw and cooked meats. Don't make the
common mistake of placing cooked meat back on a plate that held raw meat.
